National Institute of Bank Management

Introduction: The National Institute of Bank Management is a Premier Institution for Research, Training and Consultancy in the Field of Banking and Finance in India

The forces of change shaping the banking and financial system worldwide are fundamental and constant. The intense competitive pressure on the financial system has generated a variety of products and services to meet the specialized needs of millions of customers. The impact of these changes in the international financial system was felt in India in the early nineties when she initiated the process of integrating her economy with the global economic order. This ushered in the phase of financial sector reform in our country.

Reforms, which are primarily aimed at aligning the Indian banking system to the international best practices, are having lasting effects on the entire fabric of the Indian financial system which is presently undergoing a major phase of metamorphosis. While reflecting on the dynamics of this change and its implications in the management of banks, one need not emphasize the phenomenal growth profile of the Indian banking industry in retrospect and prospect in terms of business, branch network, etc. Correspondingly, the average population served per bank branch came down significantly.

The cultural diversity, vast geographical spread and federal character of the country are amply represented in the complexity of the banks’ operations. There has been a perceptible change in the environmental scenario in banking and finance since the early nineties, and, consequently, managing these institutions efficiently is a major and continuous challenge.

Vision of the Institute: The National Institute of Bank Management will be the trustee for India for helping to create world-class, competitive banking and financial services capabilities. The Institute would endeavor to offer knowledge-based products and services in the field of bank management that are as good as, if not better than the best in the world. While much of the products of NIBM would be of universal interest, there would also be a focus on the legal and institutional aspects specific to India. NIBM will be the preferred partner for enabling vision, strategies, organization, systems, technical, managerial and leadership competencies in the banking and financial sector, so as to help retain a high share of the domestic market, as well as capture a significant share of the global market.

Academic Activities

Training Programmes

The Institute conducts a large number of educational and training programmes (about 150) each year. Apart from general management, programmes are conducted in all functional areas of bank management. NIBM’s programmes are customized to the needs of banks and financial institutions in India as well as groups of other developing countries. On request, the Institute conducts offshore training programmes too. Due to the wide research base and close and continuous interactions with banks and financial institutions, most of the Institute’s programmes are a class by themselves. The programmes are tailored to the needs of bank personnel ranging from chief executives to the middle management. Themes, objectives, duration and level of participation of programmes vary, hence the institute’s programmesmay be classified into the following groups :

Earlier Emphasis
LONG DURATION GENERAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES essentially educational programmes, aimed at raising the professional management skills of middle and senior level executives used to be the core of NIBM’s training activity.

The Bank Management Programme (BMP) was meant for middle level bank and finance executives. This programme was comparable to a university run one-year MBA programme. However, it was specially designed for the needs of banks and the financial institutions. It was an intensive, residential programme comprising 20 course with an average of 40 hours of classwork. Besides, each participant was required to carry out a research project on a problem selected by the top executives of his/her bank and submit a dissertation. On successful completion of both the course work and the project work, the participant was awarded a post-Graduate Diploma in Bank Management. This programme was open to foreign participants also.

The Management Education Programme (MEP) was meant for executives who were just entering into the senior management cadres. Its duration was six weeks and covered all functional areas of bank management.

RECENT SHIFT focus has now shifted from long to short duration training programmes.

SHORT DURATION GENERAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES aim at sharpening the perspectives and skills of the senior and top management cadres in banks and financial institutions.

ANNUAL CONFERENCES AND SEMINARS ON TOPICAL ISSUES are one of the major NIBM strategies to provide a forum for discussing the basic as well as current concerns at the various levels of senior and top management.
