MIT Women Engineering College, Pune, Maharashtra

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a simple step. “

And so began Maharashtra Academy of Engineering and Educational Research's (MAEER) journey in 1983 to become India's most respected and trusted “ Center of Excellence ” in the field of Education and Research.

It was Dr. Vishwanath Karad’s vision and dream to make good quality professional higher education available to the youth of India. The eighties was a period when there were only a few Government run engineering colleges in Maharashtra with limited seats and those failing to secure an admission in these, went to other states for pursuing their education. Dr. Karad felt the immense need to fill this lacuna.

He toiled endlessly for the improvement of the higher educational sector in Maharashtra. Being an eminent accomplished engineer by qualification, a noble educationist by profession and a teacher of repute, he wrote articles in newspapers about the lack of private players in the field of professional education.

The government authorities were highly impressed by Dr. Karad’s efforts and his proposed plan for MAEER. They granted him permission to establish MAEER and the rest as they say is history…

Today under the aegis of MAEER there are nearly 63 educational and research institutions offering KG to PG education. The expanse of MAEER covers the fields of Engineering Sciences, Medical Sciences, Management Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Marine Engineering Sciences, along with an International Baccalaureate School. MAEER is also at the forefront of spreading the message of peace and spirituality through its most unique institution the “World Peace Centre”.

Mahavir Education Soceity's Shah & Anchor Kutchhi Engineering College, Bombay

Mahavir Education Trust was established in the year 1983 with the main purpose of promoting technical education. With the help of generous donations of two main donors viz., Shrimati Laxmiben Karamshibhai Shah Trust and Shah Lalji Velji Anchorwalal, Polytechnic under the name of Shah & Anchor Kutchhi Polytechnic was started in the year 1983. The trust was lucky to have the inauguration of the Polytechnic done at the hands of Shri Vasantdada Patil, the then, Chief Minister of Maharashtra State.

Further, it was felt that University level education was also the need of the society so within a year in 1984, Mangal Textiles Building located in the Ujagar Industrial Estate was purchased. After necessary modifications in the building Shah & Anchor Kutchhi Engineering College was started in that building in 1985.

Visualising the needs for expansion, the Trust started the process of purchasing the adjoining vacant plot in the year 1990, but as this plot was owned by about 10 to 12 persons in parts, the persistent efforts enabled the Trust to get the possession of the plot in 1993 only. The construction work for the Modern building for the Engineering College was started in 1994. The Trust was given IOD/CC for 2&1/2 (two and half) floors every successive year, on completion of construction of the 2 & ½ floors every year. The complete building of 7 floors & the stilts was ready within 4 years.

The new building is provided with Modern state of the art Electronics, Computers, IT laboratories and the necessary sized classrooms with proper lightings, the library, mini auditorium etc as per the Central/State Government authorities (i.e. A.I.C.T.E./D.T.E.) norms.

The College has been awarded “ A “ Grade by the Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra State.

The built up area of the College building is 1 lakh 10 thousand square feet. I must make a mention of the fact that presently we have 7 (seven) computer laboratories and an Internet Centre out of which 3 are IBM Laboratories, 2 are HP/COMPAQ laboratories with the latest Computers and Servers while the other laboratories are having older versions of computers again from the MNC companies like HP and the same are being upgraded to the latest Intel Pentium P-4s branded computers.

In addition to these, two more computer laboratories are being added which are being equipped with the latest Intel Pentium P4s from the MNC companies Compaq & Acer and will be completed by this March. Thus the College will have about 450 branded Computers in Nine Computer laboratories and the Internet Centre. The old Engineering College building was modified and renovated to satisfy the needs of a modern polytechnic and the Shah & Anchor Kutchhi Polytechnic has been shifted to this building with a built up area of 45 thousand square feet.

The Trust has developed and is maintaining two traffic islands at the Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and also maintaining a Playground. The Mahavir Education Trust is also prepared not only to maintain the Mahavir Education Trust Chowk but also the beautifiation of the foot path from the chowk upto the college by planting trees on the said food path adding to the aesthetic environment and keeping with the requirement of ‘ Clean Mumbai Green Mumbai’.

Institute of Technology for Women Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University (S.N.D.T) Women's University, Mumbai

Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University (S.N.D.T) Women's University, Mumbai

About University: The year 1896 marks the beginning of a new era in the history of women’s education in India when Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve established an ashram for widows and helpless women at Hingne near Pune. He realized that to make these women self-sufficient, self- reliant and self- confident, schooling was essential at the ashram.Karve launched a programme of schooling at ashram, which latter became regular school for girls and women. In a society governed by age old customs and conservative attitudes towards women, an institution of this type was bound to face social and economic difficulties. He had a dream of establishing women’s university and his friends sent him a booklet on the Japanese women’s university at Tokyo. In December 1915 Karve in his presidential address to the National Social reform Congress at Bombay announced his decision to shape his dream into reality. and in 1916 the first college started with the enrollment of five students which gradually took shape as women’s university. Karve did not wait for the Government permission for funds.

The vision of Maharashi Karve and the foresight of Sir Vithaldas Thackersey led to the establishment of the first Women’s University in India. Recognizing the pioneering work of Dr. Karve . Sir Vithaldas Thackersey made a generous contribution of Rs. 15 lacs to commemorate the memory of his mother, Nathibai. In 1920 after the great benefactor’s mother Nathibai, the University was named as Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University.

In 1936, the headquarters of the University was shifted to Bombay. The University continued to grow, providing higher education to more and more women. In 1951, the University was granted statutory recognition and was renamed as Shrimati Nathibai Thackersey Women’s University now popularly known as SNDT Women’s University. The recognition came along with rare privilege of having a jurisdiction across the country.

Today SNDT has become a symbol of excellence in higher educational opportunities for women. The journey has been a long one since 1916. There are three university campuses – two at Mumbai-Churchgate and Juhu and one at Karve Road, Pune.

VISION: For over nine decades, the university has been striving for and growing to newer heights of performance and outreach. The vision of Bharat Ratna Dr. D.K.Karve to build a citadel of learning for women is encapsulated in the motto of the university.

MISSION : Empowerment of women, through education, has been the single-minded mission of this University ever since its establishment. With socio-cultural changes and technological advances, the goals and objectives of the University are being continuously reinterpreted to make them relevant to the needs of women and in the context of prevailing needs of the society

The Institute's infrastructure is second to none-well stocked library, well equipped workshop, state-of-art computer centers, drawing studios, lecture halls, laboratories, conference hall, seminar hall, etc.

Gondia Educational Soceity:

History throws up many a great event in the political, social, religious, economic, industrial and educational fields and every event gives birth to a leader and an endearing personality. The advent of Manoharbhai Patel Institute of Engineering & Technology, popularly known in India as MIET of Gondia, has been a memorable event and that too as a crowning glory in a chain of great events in the district of Bhandara going back to the era of freedom struggle in Indian history.
Those were the days of the Raj and its hold on India was total and complete. Then came the days when its hold on Indians became less and less and reached to a point when the days of the Raj were numbered. By 1945 every Indian rose up to the occasion to the call of Mahatma Gandhi. Though India was enslaved by the alien rule Indians never felt enslaved and rose up to show that India was resurgent in every field of activity in every city, in every town and in every village of India. Bhandara district in the then known central province was also one of the shining examples of resurgent India. The achievement of the people of Bhadara in the filed of education led by a visionary leader and the attendant results accomplished would speak for itself.
Literacy and education were not the priority of the Raj as their sole focus was to hold on to their colony, India, the jewel in the Crown. Most of the districts of India were suffering for want of any basic amenities. Bhandara was also one of those districts worst affected.
The glaring and shocking fact was that 94% of the population of Bhandara district was illiterate! There was only one Government public school in he whole of the district! In 1945 what Bhandara witnessed was the snowballing effect of a determined local initiative. A few resurgent people led by late Mr. Manoharbhai Patel, a wealthy and well known businessman and a philanthropist, came forward to set up the second school in Gondia town in the district with help coming from his friends. It was in that period the concept of Gondia Education Society was mooted and later the Society came into existence. In the ensuing six years many more primary and secondary schools were set up one by one on a relay basis. It was indeed a relentless and tireless effort. The results were path breaking. The literacy rate rose from a mere 6% to 14% in the Bhandara district!
But, late Manoharbhai was not fully satisfied. What made him to move further was that in spite of this enviable achievement there was no college for higher education in the Bhandara district. It was again late Shri Manoharbhai Patel leading in the front to gather support for establishing the first college in Gondia. With the help and cooperation of his trusted colleagues the first college was started with a skeleton staff in a warehouse provided by Manoharbhai's close friend and associate late Shri. C.J. Patel. That was the beginning of the second collective initiative.
In a short span of ten years and by 1961 Gondia Education Society could establish 22 high schools spread across the district and in the same year two more colleges were also established.
One great act that would speak volumes as to how much late Manoharbhai and his friends were devoted to the noble cause they all espoused and assiduously pursued was transferring all educational institutions founded by Gondia Education Society to the local Zilla Parishad (District Council). It required a grand vision to think in terms of setting a grand and a glorious precedent in public service.
A dreamer never stops dreaming and Late Manoharbhai Patel was a dreamer par excellence. He was still restless as something still made him to feel not fully content with his enormous feats. This was attributed to his earnest desire, a longing of his heart, he often expressed to his colleagues and son. That was to establish an institute of engineering and technology in Gondia.
Manoharbhai Patel Institute of Enginering & Technology (MIET) established in 1983 is the pride among the various institutions that came up in Gondia and stands as a monument to the vision and dream of the great crusader against illiteracy, Late Manoharbhi Patel.
