Oncology term literally means a branch of science that deals
with tumors and cancers.The word “onco” means bulk, mass, or tumor, while
“logy” means heavy studying.
Oncology depends on diagnostic tools like biopsy or removal
of bits of the tumour tissue and examining it under the microscope. Other
diagnostic tools include endoscopy for the gastrointestinal tract, imaging
studies like X-rays, CT scanning, MRI scanning, ultrasound and other
radiological techniques, Scintigraphy, Single Photon Emission Computed
Tomography, Positron emission tomography and nuclear medicine techniques etc.

Job Prospects:
An oncologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the
diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Some oncologists treat patients with all
forms of cancer, and others specialize in only one type of cancer.
Oncologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of
cancer. After a cancer diagnosis is made, it is the oncologist’s role to
explain the cancer diagnosis and the meaning of the disease stage to the
patient; discuss various treatment options; recommend the best course of
treatment; deliver optimal care; and improve quality of life both through
curative therapy and palliative care with pain and symptom management.
Oncologist is particularly responsible for issues of
treatment with anticancer drugs such as chemotherapy, immune therapy and
hormonal therapy.
