Job Prospects
A career in neuroscience is a challenging but an interesting
field in science. Neurologists get paid quite well. Therefore, most students
opt for a career in neurology in comparison to psychiatry and neuropathology.
It is easy to find a profitable job in hospitals, companies associated with
research, government organizations and maybe even pharmaceutical companies.
Neurologists are physicians, or medical doctors, who
specialize in nervous system disorders. Requiring extensive medical training,
this career may be a good fit for individuals with a passion for learning about
and treating diseases that affect the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous
system.
Neurologists diagnose and determine treatment by examining
brain and neck nerves, muscle strength, movement, balance, reflexes and a
patient's speech. The most common diagnostic tests performed by a neurologist
include the CAT scan, MRI, spinal taps, electroencephalography and electromyography.
Neurologists use medicine or other non-surgical techniques to treat
neurological problems. They refer patients to a neurosurgeon if the treatment
requires surgery. He may also refer the patient to other specialist for further
diagnosis.
