MBBS COURSE IN INDIA
The Medical Council of India (MCI) controls and monitors medical Education in India. New Colleges or Universities can grant MBBS, MS, MD or any Graduate or PG degree or diploma only if those colleges are strictly adhering to the standards set by the Medical Council of India.

The MBBS course is of four and a half year's (54months) duration and is followed by one year of Compulsory Rotating Residential Internship.

Admission to the Medical Course:
Eligibility Criteria fixed by MCI* (Open Category):
The candidate shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December, of the year of admission to the MBBS course.

Qualifying examinations:
  • The higher secondary examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination a with subjects physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics or any other elective subjects with English at a level not less than core course or
  • The pre-professional/pre-medical examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, after passing either the higher secondary school examination, or the pre-university or an equivalent Examination or
  • The intermediate examination in science of an Indian University/Board or other recognized examining body with Physics, Chemistry and Biology which shall include a practical test in these subjects and also English as a compulsory subject or
  • The first year of the three years degree course of a recognized university, with Physics, chemistry and Biology including a practical test in these subjects or
  • B.Sc. examination of an Indian University, provided that he/she has passed the B.Sc. examination with not less than two of the following subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology) and further that he/she has passed the earlier qualifying examination with the following subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English or
  • Any other examination which, in scope and standard is found to be equivalent to the intermediate science examination of an Indian University/Board, taking Physics, Chemistry and Biology including practical test in each of these subjects and English.

Procedure for selection to MBBS course:-           
  • Admission only on merit basis of qualifying examination: - candidate for admission to MBBS course must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology & English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the qualifying examination Or
  • Admission on basis of Competitive entrance examination,:- a candidate must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% of marks taken together in Physics Chemistry and Biology at the qualifying examination and in addition must have come in the merit list prepared as a result of such competitive entrance examination by securing not less then 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology competitive examination.
Major competitive examinations:
  • To obtain medical seat in a reputed institution candidates should appear for various entrance tests in All India level/State level. Some of important All India Entrance Tests are AIPMT/PD conducted by CBSE, AIIMS, Institute of Medical Sciences BHU, AFMC, CMC Vellore, CMC Ludhiana, JIPMER etc. In the state level, a student has to get through Common Entrance test of concerned states such as Kerala KEAM entrance examination, Karnataka Common Entrance Test etc, The deemed Universities conduct their own entrance Exams for Medical admissions. A student can also pursue MBBS education outside India but one has to ascertain whether the degree offered by the institute/University is valid or not. Most of the Government Medical Colleges offer admissions only to Indian students on the basis of their performance in a competitive entrance test. Private colleges offer seats on Management/NRI quota also.
  • Admissions to postgraduate courses (MD/MS/MDS) are also based on entrance tests conducted by the colleges and medical universities.
Course, Duration and Subjects:
  • Every student shall undergo a period of certified study extending over 4 ½ academic years divided into 9 semesters, followed by one year compulsory rotating internship.
  • The period of 4 1/2 years is divided into three phases as follows:-
  • Phase-1 (12 months/2 semesters) Pre-clinical subjects such as Human Anatomy, Physiology including Bio-Physics, Biochemistry and introduction to Community Medicine including Humanities are taught.
  • Phase-II (18 months/3 semesters) During this phase Para-clinical and clinical subjects namely Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine including Toxicology and part of Community Medicine are taught.
  • Phase-III (24 months/4 semesters),Medicine and its allied specialties, Surgery and its allied specialties, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Community medicine is taught.
