Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
Institute of Medical Sciences:
Introduction: Medical education in Varanasi, the oldest living city of the world, dates from the days of Sushruta 500 BC. Infact this is also the history of Medical education in India. The great treatise - 'Sushruta Samhita' is a living testimony of contributions to Medical education that originated in Varanasi, Sushruta was the first to perform cadaver dissections and described a number of operating instruments and surgical operations. Perhaps it is a continuation of this historical perspective that Medical education in Banaras Hindu University took roots in 1920 with the establishment of Department of Ayurveda under Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology (1922-1927). Under the influence of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviyaji, Seth Mathuradas Vissanji Khimji of Bombay donated a large some of Rs.1.5 Lacs for the Ayurvedic College. This was further augmented by donations from Shri Daya Shankar Dev Shankar Dave of Kathiawar and Bombay.
In the year 1924-25, Ayurvedic Aushadhalaya was established to 1. prepare medicines, 2. teach Ayurvedic students the formulations, and 3. make the Ayurvedic formulations available to general public at affordable price. To help in this arrangement a large Botanical Garden was created for raw materials that still continue to discharge its purpose.
In the next series of developments, Maharaja Sir Prabhu Narayan Singhji of Banaras laid the foundation stone of the Ayurvedic Hospital on 19th January 1924.
Years later, in 1960 the Ayurvedic College was converted to the College of Medical Sciences with Professor K.N. Uduppa as its founder principal. The College of Medical Sciences then had 10 Departments - 9 in Modern Medicine and 1 in Indian Medicine. In 1963, MBBS training was recognized both by General Medical Council, U.K. and Medical Council of India. The Post Graduate Institute of Indian Medicine (since 1963) was merged with Institute of Medical Sciences established in 1971.
The postgraduate medical education, started as in-service program in 1963 (3 years after establishment of Medical College), took the form of a formal training program in 1971 after due permission from the Visitor of the Banaras Hindu University i.e., the President of India. This upgraded College of Medical Sciences to Institute of Medical Sciences in 1971.
Further growth of postgraduate education continued with approval of DM and MCh courses in 10 Superspecialties in 1976. In 1978, the existing Faculty was bifurcated into the Faculty of Ayurveda and Faculty of Medicine to facilitate their independent growth.

About BHU : Banaras Hindu University ranks among the first few in the country in the field of academic and research output. This university has two campuses, 3 institutes, 16 faculties, 140 departments, 4 advanced centers and 4 interdisciplinary schools. The University is making its mark at the national and international levels in a number of frontier areas of Science, Social Science, Technology, Medicine and Agriculture etc.
A university can grow successfully only when research and teaching mesh together seamlessly - one without the other is incomplete. Therefore we have ensured the development of a collaborative environment conducive to learning, exposure to the best international practices and promotion of innovation and creativity.
BHU today has nearly twenty thousand students including 2500 research scholars and 650 foreign students from 34 nations, under one roof who are pursuing different academic programmes at this campus as well as the newly established Rajiv Gandhi South Campus. These are some of the brightest young minds in the country and abroad, who have joined this University after clearing a rigorous All India Entrance Test.
We realize that the rapid pace of development in the country has raised the awareness as well as expectations of the people. Institutions of higher learning are instrumental in providing equality of opportunities, which is the essence of participatory democracy. This will not only remove a sense of alienation and neglect in the backward regions but also prevent out migration from these areas.
BHU has established the Rajiv Gandhi South Campus at Barkachha about 75 Kms southwest of Varanasi on 2760 acres of land. The first academic session commenced from 2006-07 with six programmes which has increased to more than 25 in the present session. The Campus is heading well as per your vision for education to generate new breed of human resource who would be job creators and not job seekers.

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, Maharashtra
Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, is the first Institute of modern medicine that is placed in a rural setting in India. Based onintro1 Gandhian ideology, it was established in 1969 as a Gandhi Centenary Project and takes pride in the fact that it’s Kasturba Hospital, started in 1944, is the only hospital started by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi himself. The Institute’s inception goes back to the freedom struggle, when the seed was sown. Late Dr. Sushila Nayar, the Founder Director of the Institute, was arrested along with Kasturba and Mahatma Gandhi during the Quit India Movement and was kept in detention with them in the Aga Khan Palace at Pune, where she had an opportunity to observe and understand Gandhiji from close quarters. She intro2ealized that he was a Statesman with a vision, longer than life. After their release from the prison when Gandhiji returned to Sevagram, he found that the village often faced a number of epidemics, resulting in high morbidity and mortality. So he asked Dr. Sushila Nayar to have some health facility and the result was Kasturba Hospital in the memory of Ba who had passed away on 22 February, 1944 while in detention at Aga Khan Palace. The 15-bedded hospital was actually for the Women and Children of the village. The seed to serve the poor and needy was sown so deep in the mind of Dr. Sushila Nayar that when she went to Johns Hopkins, USA to specialize in Cardiology, it did not interest her and she shifted to Doctorate in Public Health.
In 1962, when Dr. Sushila Nayar became the Union Health Minister, she became aware of the difficulties in finding qualified doctors for serving in rural areas. She also realized that Primary Health Centres had been set up but the doctors were reluctant to go and serve the villagers. The Government had been trying to improve medical care in the rural areas but about 1/3rd of the Primary Health Centres, each catering to about 80,000 or more population, were without doctors. The then Prime Minister Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, while addressing the Central Council of Health Care in July 1965, suggested to the Union Health Minister, to start Medical Colleges in rural areas so that young doctors trained in the rural settings would have better understanding of the rural health problems and would be better placed to attend to the health problems of the villagers. Dr. Sushila Nayar a young medical graduate, suggested that the first rural Medical College in the country should be started at Sevagram to be run by the registered Kasturba Health Society, Sevagram. The proposal was sent to the Planning Commission and was approved. The National Committee for Gandhi Centenary celebrations, with the President of India as the President and the Prime Minister as the Chairman of the Executive Committee gave their blessings to the proposal of Dr. Sushila Nayar and the first rural Medical College of the country at Sevagram was included in the Gandhi Centenary Programme. It was resolved that the expenditure would be shared by the Govt. of India, Govt. of Maharashtra and Kasturba Health Society in proportion of 50:25:25, and in 1969 the first batch of 60 students was admitted. Specific reservations were kept for students coming from rural background and are still being kept, fulfilling the dreams of the great visionaries Dr. Sushila Nayar, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri and Gandhiji himself.
Born under the influence of Gandhiji, the Institute endeavors to maintain and impart to it’s students values that form an integral part of a good human being. It envisages, to bring out doctors that would have a better community oriented health care approach and who would impart services based on ethical and moral values founded on the principles of truth, non-violence and love. Smoking, drinking of alcohol & non vegetarian food is strictly prohibited. Staff and students are expected to wear Khadi. Sarva Dharma Community Prayer and Shramdan also form a part of the Code of conduct.
The college holds it’s own All India entrance test for MBBS course at MGIMS Sevagram that includes a special paper on Gandhian Thoughts. Sixty five students are admitted purely on merit every year. It also offers post-graduation in all the major medical disciplines, all most all recognized by the Medical Council of India. It is the first Institute in the country which started M.D. in Community Medicine in 1977. The course is similar to that of Preventive and Social Medicine but has an additional component of training medical doctors as family physicians capable of providing primary health care to rural masses. On the same principles, the hospital also runs a General outpatient department which is like a model Primary Health Centre and the interns posted there learn to deliver comprehensive health care not only in providing preventive and curative services but also in picking up the knowledge of when to refer a patient to a specialist.
The Institute follows all the norms laid down by the Medical Council of India and by the affiliating University, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik for quality Medical Education. However in order to achieve it’s objectives included in it’s curriculum, it has made some innovations which are unique and have stood the test of time now for many years. These innovations in no way hamper the academic results, which till date have always been commendable.
Soon after admission to the MBBS course, the students live in Gandhiji’s Ashram at Sevagram for 15 days, where they are oriented to Gandhian ideology and learn the Gandhian way of life. In a rapidly changing society influenced by culture of consumerism and falling moral values, this period of 15 days in the Ashram leaves an imprint on the young minds and helps them in becoming more fore-bearing and better individuals. Drawn from different geographical and cultural backgrounds of the country, the students within a short span of time exemplify real unity in diversity by exhibiting respect for each other’s cultural values.
The post-graduate students are encouraged to attend continuation of medical education (CME) activities, conferences and workshops. They are also being deputed to other medical institutes for training on specialized tochnical aspects related to the subjects Radiology, Anaesthesiolgy, Medicine and Psychiatry. The results of all the Post Graduate department are above 90%.
India is primarily a country of the rural masses. This college was established with the concept to evolve a pattern of medical education that was best suited to the needs of the country and to bring out doctors with community oriented health care approach by training them in the community also rather than only in the four walls of the hospital. In this context, during the first year itself students adopt a nearby village (a new one for each batch) and live with the villagers for a fortnight in the village. Here they survey the village, understand their social and health related problems and impart health education. They help villagers in forming Self Help groups for health and economic empowerment of women, youth and the aged. The students are made responsible for the health care of the families allotted to them and they follow them till the end of their medical training. By the time they leave, they develop a bond with the villagers and the experience fills them with compassion and a sense of commitment towards the deserving poor rural communities.

KJ Somaiyya Medical College & Research Centre, Mumbai, Maharashtra
Shriman Karamshibhai Jethabhai Somaiya is the Founder. It's no small achievement to distinguish oneself in such diverse fields as commerce, education, and philanthropy. Pujya Shriman Karamshibhai Jethabhai Somaiya, born on May 16 1902 in the remote village of Malunjar in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, India, was however, a blessed person by dint of hard work and singular devotion to service.
Born to humble beginnings he rose to become one of the doyens of the sugar industry in Western India. His pioneering efforts revolutionized the sugar industry. Karamshibhai was a humble person. He worked hard and for long hours.
The young Karamshi, after completing school at the New High School in Mumbai (now the Bharda School) went back to his hometown in Ahmednagar embarking on a career of tireless work marked by singular devotion to whatever he did.
The early decades of the 20th century were a period of significant national resurgence and no sensitive young man could ignore the stirring presence of Mahatma Gandhi. Karamshi was no exception. His ever seeking mind was moulded by Gandhiji's ideas of 'Swadeshi' and 'Satyagraha'. To make India independent and industrially and economically advanced, was the dream of every young mind.
Young Karamshibhai Somaiya engaged in looking after his father's small grocery business, would travel from village to village selling groceries and booking orders all the while nursing the dream of the resurgent India of Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda.
To further his dream of contributing to India's economic independence, he became a partner in a leading sugar trading firm M/s. Shobachand Ramnarayan Kothod of Shrirampur in Ahmednagar district. His knowledge of the sugar industry was soon widely acknowledged and respected and in course of time he came to be called 'the Sugar King of India'.
When in the thirties the Deccan canals were commissioned by the Government, Shri K.J. Somaiya launched the Sakarwadi factory in 1939, and another, Lakshmiwadi factory in 1941,the start of the Godavari Sugar Mills Ltd. in Maharashtra State. One of the most successful entrepreneurs of recent times in the State, Shri K.J. Somaiya occupied many positions of public responsibility. He was the President of the Deccan Sugar Factories Association, the President of the Deccan Sugar Technologists Association and played a leading part in the deliberations of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. He was often consulted on matters crucial to the Sugar Industry.
Endowed with a sharp business acumen, a balanced perspective and a social bent of mind he set up the Somaiya Trust in 1953 for furthering his dream of shaping young minds through quality education. For this purpose he bought a large area of land at Ghatkopar in the godforsaken outlying eastern suburb of Mumbai, much to the consternation of the members of his family and colleagues. It was no place they thought to develop an educational complex in a far flung marshy swamp!
Shri K.J. Somaiya proved all skeptics wrong as witnessed by the mushrooming growth of Ghatkopar as a formidable centre of middle class living. Karamshibhai laid the foundation for SOMAIYA VIDYAVIHAR in 1959. In close to four and a half decades it has grown into a large educational complex with 34 institutions catering to diverse fields of education such as Humanities, Engineering, Education, Medicine, Management and Mass Communication, with more than 27000 students and 1700 teaching faculty on a throbbing 65 acre campus!
It was the vision of Shri K.J. Somaiya that modern professional education must remain true to the spirit of Indian ethos and culture. He insisted on value-based education, believing firmly that a community uncaring for its traditions is decadent and insubstantial. He was passionate about propagating the Sanskrit language and the promotion of studies in ancient Indian thought and culture. He envisaged Somaiya Vidyavihar as the Nalanda of learning where students and teachers would live in an intellectual and spiritual fellowship.
No sketch of Shri K.J. Somaiya can be complete without mentioning his philanthropy. He established the Girivanavasi Pragati Mandal in 1974 in the tribal area of Dahanu, in Thane District, 110 kms from Mumbai, to alleviate the problems and suffering of the tribal community. Well known surgeons and physicians were associated with the annual eye-cum-medical camps.
The Mandal established a training centre and experimental farm for agriculture extension work. He founded a residential school to cater to the educational needs of children of the migrant tribal population providing free quality instruction. He also built a 40 bed hospital with a resident doctor facility to cater to their health needs. Shri K.J. Somaiya himself worked in these centres and conducted health camps setting an example of selfless service. His work in the drought affected districts of Gujarat, specially Kutch, during 1987-88 won the appreciation of the then Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi.
In all he did, Pujya Karamshibhai brought a sense of love and humanism, qualities imbibed in his early youth from the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. He believed in the ancient Sanskrit saying (na manushit paro dharmah). "There is no religion greater than Man". "There is no life that is not in community" said eminent poet T.S. Eliot. Pujya Karamshibhai's life exemplified these lofty principles through practice.
Shri K.J. Somaiya passed away on May 9, 1999, a week before his 97th birthday. Somaiya Vidyavihar is the living legacy he's left behind, a standing monument to his sagacity, perseverance and foresight.
Shri K.J. Somaiya was warm and endearing. Stately in appearance, immaculately dressed, generally in spotless white hand spun khaddar, he exuded a picture of resourcefulness and restraint. He was compassionate and reached out to those in suffering. At the age of 60 he relinquished the leadership of his economic enterprise to his son Dr Shantilal Somaiya, and fully immersed himself in social service. He was committed to the ideal "what you receive from society give back multifold".

"Education means bringing out the best elements of the body, the mind and the soul of a child or a man after achieving their all round development. Literacy is not the final goal of education nor is its beginning. It is only one of the tools to educate men and women. So, I would begin the education of a child by teaching him something useful, some handicraft or the creation of something new."

Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University is an organization with a difference. It has its own well defined ideological orientation and commitments. Social transformation in a desired direction is one of its cherished goals and it believes that education can be an effective prime mover for such social transformation.
Dr. Patangrao Kadam has very aptly coined "Social Transformation through Dynamic Education" as the official motto of Bharati Vidyapeeth. Education can be an effective instrument of social change, if it is dynamic. This conceptualization of dynamic education at Bharati Vidyapeeth is reflected in the innovative academic programmes, multi-location campus presence, enrollment of a large number of students from economically & socially backward areas, special schools and colleges for Girl’s and Tribal people.
Bharati Vidyapeeth as an educational organization has committed itself:
* To make available quality education in different areas of knowledge to the students as per their choice and inclination
* To offer education to the students in a conducive ambience created by enriched infrastructure and academic facilities in its campuses
* To bring education within the reach of rural, tribal and girl students by providing them substantive fee concessions and subsidized hostel and mess facilities
* To make available quality education to the students of rural, tribal and other deprived sections of the population.
The functioning of all the constituent units of Bharati Vidyapeeth and BVU is designed and geared up towards the fulfillment of these commitments.
