The exam preparation time varies from one individual to another, but the start of class 11th is considered the best time to start preparing for the medical entrance exams, since the syllabus for these entrance exams is almost same as that of class 11th and 12th.

The purpose of conducting entrance examinations is to select candidates for admission to medical courses at diploma, degree, post-diploma, postgraduate degree and research levels.

In general, the entrance examination for admission to diploma and degree courses is held separately at the all India level and state level. However, entrance examinations for admission to postgraduate degrees and research programmes are done on an all India basis or state basis. Medical Entrance Exam Basic Pattern:

• The language of a medical question paper can be both English and Hindi.
• Medical entrance test may be a one stage or two stage entrance examination. • Any medical entrance exam question paper usually divided in four parts namely Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Knowledge.

• Each question has four choices and 1 mark is offered for each correct choice. One third marks are however detected for every wrong answer.
• Once the results for the medical entrance exams are announced, counseling letter is sent to all the successful candidates with a prospectus of comprehensive admission procedure as may apply. 

Medical Entrance Exam Syllabus:

• To become a doctor one has to secure excellent scores in Biology/ Biotechnology, Chemistry, Physics, and English. Students who have completed their class 12 with science background are eligible to apply for medical entrance exams. However, certain exams will require the students to have a pass in the B.S or Pre Medical background.
• The syllabus of medical exams will be of class 12th. Questions will be asked from Physics, Chemistry and Biology topics at 11th and 12th CBSE/ICSE and state boards. Usually, the questions are objective type. The paper consists of 200 questions and the duration is of 3 hours. Barring a few state level or specific private institutions exams, such exams have negative marking. Hence, students must answer only those questions for which they are sure of the answer.

• The minimum age of the candidate should not be less than 17 years.
• A candidate must have passed Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (10+2) or its equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology from a recognized board and English as one ofthe main subjects.
• A candidate should have passed the 10+2 exam with 50% aggregate in Chemistry, Biology, English and Physics.
• The minimum passing percentage for the reserve categories is 55 % to appear in the entrance exams.

• The General Merit candidates must have passed these subjects (PCB) individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in PCB (40% in the case of SC/ST & OBC candidates of Karnataka State)
• The candidates who are appearing for the prescribed qualifying examination and expecting the percentage of marks as at (b) are also eligible to apply
• The General Merit candidates must also secure not less than 50% marks (40% in the case of SC/ST & OBC candidates of Karnataka) in aggregate in PCB subjects in the COMEDK UG entrance test 2015
• English is one of the subjects, as in the previous years, to be tested along with Physics, Chemistry and Biology during COMEDK UGET-2015; the General Merit candidates should secure not less than 50% marks in English (40% in the case of SC/ST & OBC candidates of Karnataka)
• However, the marks so secured in English will not be added for the determination of rank which shall be decided exclusively based on the minimum required marks secured by the candidates in PCB subjects
• Further, a candidate is not entitled for a rank if he/she fails to secure 50% or 40% of the marks as the case may be in English
• The paper on English language will be normally of second PUC or 10+2 standard and will test the candidate’s comprehension of the language, the structure of words, phrases, clauses and sentences
• The candidate shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December 2015 of the year of admission to the MBBS/BDS course

Eligibility Criteria for Engineering & Architecture:

Based on written request of KUPECA, the following shall be the eligibility criteria for Engineering and Architecture courses

Engineering:

• The qualifying examinations prescribed for admission for BE/B.Arch is second PUC or 10+2 Higher Secondary or equivalent exam recognized by State/Central Govt.; the last two years of study shall comprise of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with English as a compulsory subject
• The General Merit candidates should have passed with a minimum aggregate of 45% marks (40% in respect of SC/ST & OBC candidates of Karnataka State in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) and should have passed these subjects individually
• Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects along with Chemistry or Bio Technology or Biology or any other technical vocational courses as one of the optional subjects; however, changes, if any, in the eligibility criteria by the AICTE will be adopted
• An attempt in the COMEDK Entrance Test seeking admission to Engineering courses is considered adequate for figuring in the rank list
• Diploma candidates are not eligible to take the Entrance Test as there are no lateral entry admissions

Architecture:

• The prescribed qualifying examination for admission to B.Arch course is second PUC or 10+2 Higher Secondary or equivalent examination with Mathematics as one of the subjects along with other subjects or a 10+3 Diploma recognized by Central /State Govt and having obtained atleast 50% marks in aggregate (45% in the case of SC/ST & OBC candidates of Karnataka)
• The candidates should have appeared for National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) conducted by the Council of Architecture with a minimum score of 80 out of 200 marks for both General Merit and Category students

Clinical practice with the degree:

One of the options would be to start one's own clinical practice with the knowledge acquired in the five and half year course of M.B.B.S. It was the major option in olden days where the specialties were not much developed and very few specialties with very few colleges offering those were there. But the scenario has changed over the years, that there are very specialized doctors for each and every problem which has been possible with technological advancements in the field of medicine. Also the students these days are not well equipped with required clinical skills to practice on their own. Actually this is due the fact that every M.B.B.S student is expecting to join a specialty and not keen on learning as undergraduate itself.

Again this clinical practice can be in government sector or private sector. In Govt. sector again you can be a regular doctor recruited for fulltime or on a contract basis (For those who work as a regular doctor will get a 50% quota in the postgraduate admissions in the state of Andhra Pradesh). In private sector you can join a corporate hospital as a D.M.O (duty medical officer) or maintain one's own clinic.

Going for a specialty after M.B.B.S:

This is the biggest option for which everyone is looking forward to after their M.B.B.S completion. It is as hard as it is charmful to do this. This is because there are very less postgraduate seats and they are even few for each specialty. It is very hard to keep up your passion (course of interest) and college of interest at the same time, if you have to get a seat under merit quota. Usually many of them take long breaks of one to two years (if serious) to prepare for the PG entrance. One has the option to fight in the entrance of their respective states or in the central exams like AIIMS, JIPMER, PGI Chandigarh. There are several types in going for a specialization. One is a 3 year M.D/M.S course, second one is a 2 year pgDiploma courses like Dch (diploma in child health), DGO(diploma in gynecology and obstetrics, DMRD (diploma in medical radiology and diagnostics) e.t.c Apart from these two we have an option of NB(diploma of the national board) in all of the mentioned specialties. It is equivalent to doctorate (MD) course as it is also of 3 year duration. DNB can be obtained by clearing the centralized entrance test after completing three years of

postgraduate training in hospitals recognized by the national board, New Delhi.

USMLE (United States medical licensing exam):

Clearing the United States medical licensing exam and taking up a specialty as an IMG (international medical graduate) there would be one great option to go. USMLE is a multi level exam, conducted in 3 steps. After clearing the steps one has to apply for the interviews and get selected to get residency(PG) in a specialty. One has to bear in mind that it is a global platform and highly competitive. Moreover it is a time bound and money bound process. It is also risky until you get a residency in the hospital interview.

Masters degrees other than clinical M.D s from countries like U.S:

As we have already mentioned to be eligible to practice in U.S, you need to clear the steps in USMLE and then complete the residency. Other options of higher studies in U.S are M.S( master of science) in public health- MPH, masters in health administration- MHA which are something similar to hospital management in India that I have mentioned above but more broad and superior to Indian degree. After that you can settle in hospital administration or health care delivery systems in U.S /abroad or India. Coming to other master degrees that are offered in U.S universities, we have a gamut of subjects like pre-clinical like M.S anatomy, M.S physiology, M.S biochemistry, M.S biomedical engineering, M.S medical informatics, M.S molecular biology, M.S genetics, M.S biotechnology, M.S geriatric medicine and ageing, M.S neuroscience, MS clinical psychology and many other upcoming courses.
