National Insurance Academy Pune was set up in the year 1980 by the Finance Department of the Indian government with capital patronage from LIC and public sector general insurance industry.

NIA were dedicated to Management Development Programs catering to the insurance industry professionals to enhance the management skills and domain expertise. Later, the two year Post Graduate Diploma in Management course was initiated to fulfill the growing demand of skilled professionals in Insurance and Risk Management. The program offers dual expertise in management and Insurance.

NIA started MBA education as a lateral diversification from 2004 with Dr K C Mishra as the founder director and Dr R K Parchure as MBA Coordinator, who was soon replaced by Dr S D Totade.

The Academy has a sprawling (approximately 32 acres) campus housing the administrative, academic, hostel and residential facilities amidst lush greenery. The campus is self sufficient with a Bank, Post Office, Dispensary, Sports, Gymnasium and Swimming Pool facilities.
