Methodology for Ranking
For engineering colleges, besides getting objective data from various institutes directly or using secondary sources, a perceptual survey was also conducted among the faculty and final year students of different colleges. The perceptual data was collected using a structured questionnaire which was administered to faculty members and final year students of various colleges.

The respondents were asked to rate the institutes they were familiar with on a 10-point scale against different parameters. They were also asked to assign weightage to each of the parameter.

The weightage given to each parameter was derived by taking the average weightage that faculty gave to each parameter. In all, 1018 faculty members and 1103 final-year students belonging to different engineering colleges were interviewed.

Institutes that were not evaluated by at least 25 faculty members and 25 students are not listed. In case the objective data for a parameter was not available, the perceptual score was extrapolated.

A. Intellectual Capital
Competence of faculty, research output, publications in refereed journals, number of patents, quality of students.

B. Pedagogic Systems and Processes
Effectiveness of various systems and processes like teaching, learning process, curriculum upgradation, experiential learning, admission processes, etc

C. Industry Interface
Live projects undertaken by students, research projects with industry undertaken by faculty.

D. Placements
Number and type of companies visiting for campus interviews, maximum, median, minimum salary offered for jobs in India and abroad. This parameter also considered the number of of students who went for higher education in reputed educational institutes in India and abroad.

E. Infrastructure and Support Systems
Campus area, total number of computers, number of books in library, number of faculty cabins to faculty strength ratio, number of seminar halls. The survey also took into consideration, facilities like playgrounds, gym etc. responsiveness of administration to student needs. For engineering colleges with their specific requirements, the survey covered number of engineering drawing halls, number of  workshops, number of machine in workshops, number of laboratories, budget allocated for labs, residential facilities for students and faculty.

Engineering a Future?

Making good use of an engineering degree needs careful thought before and after making the decision

Looking at the number of engineering colleges in India and the number of engineers coming out of these colleges, the questions that form in everyone’s minds are, “does India need so many engineers?” Are they all employable? The negativism brought forth by such questions has crippled engineering education in India.

In this global era, rather than focus on India, the question should be whether the world needs so many engineers. The answer is a big, “yes.” Is there a need for scientists? The answer is again, “yes.” The world needs in plenty well-equipped, talented graduates with the right attitude. There are job opportunities for those who have the potential. In addition, opportunities for self-employment are also plenty for innovative and energetic minds.

Breaking free
I will look at the Indian education scenario from the point of view of parents whose wards are applying for admission to colleges. As the trend goes, most students would like to pursue professional programmes such as medicine and engineering. Since fewer seats are available for medicine, getting an MBBS seat has become extremely difficult and the majority is left with the next popular option—engineering.

Our school education system offers combinations of courses in the higher secondary level such that a student by choosing these groups can pursue engineering or medicine, even though these two streams call for entirely different aptitudes. The ideal higher secondary system would orient the student towards evaluating their aptitude and choosing to pursue one of the two streams. This would ensure that the chosen stream matches their aptitude. This is not happening now.

In the absence of proper orientation in the system, parents and their wards follow an inappropriate procedure while selecting their branch of study in the college. During counselling, we notice that the selection of a branch of study is based on the following: (1) The most sought-after branch in counselling, (2) The branch having good job opportunities as seen by the previous year placements, (3) Parental pressure and (4) Peer pressure.

This is not the right practice. The correct way will be to spend some time assessing one’s interest for a particular branch and check if it matches well with the aptitude one has and the chosen branch of study.

It is because of such practices that we face problems of employability and dissatisfaction in existing jobs, which can lead to high turnover rates, low productivity and increase in the stress level of employees.

Myth and reality
Having understood the education scenario, parents should free themselves of a few myths that surround them, and make a fair decision concerning the future of their ward.
  1. One should be a professional such as a doctor, lawyer or engineer to be successful in life. Other degree programmes are not useful.
  2. Marks scored in higher secondary are a true reflection of one’s intelligence, and the one who has scored 95 per cent is more intelligent than others.
  3. Those who studied higher secondary education in vernacular medium cannot shine in professional courses taught in English.
  4. Unemployment is high, so campus placement is everything.
  5. An engineering degree in the most popular branch, with 8.0 CGPA and above will definitely fetch a job.
How to make the choice
There are some thumb rules to be followed in choosing an engineering education.
  • The interest of the candidate and his/her choice of branch should be the criteria for admission.
  • Every parent should orient the child towards finding out their natural interest and the aptitude for the particular subject or branch of study.
  • Parents should avoid deciding for the candidate.
  • For a strong-willed person, if the choice is made based on his/her liking and natural taste, then studying that branch will be the best thing rather than joining any other branch, for whatever reason.
  • It is not wise to join a branch of study because it is popular or because the job opportunities are high.
  • The choice of institution is also critical.
The other option is for the students to take the branch of study available in a reputed college and start liking that branch, plan well and work hard. What is critical is students’ interest in the branch of study and the efforts put in by them to equip themselves adequately enough during their studies.

MCI Permitted Vs MCI Recognition

Permitted Medical Colleges/Seats
The Medical Educational Institution (Medical College) is inspected by the medical authorities (MCI) of the government of India to know whether the institution is worthy enough to be given permission to admit eligible students to study MBBS course. After inspection if MCI finds the facilities and the faculty of the educational institution (Medical College) are up to the MCI set standards   -

"The medical authorities (MCI) give permission to the medical college to start admitting  students into MBBS course. While doing so, the medical authorities (MCI) give permission for 100 seats to the institution (Medical College). These 100 seats are known as Permitted seats & such Medical Colleges are called Permitted Medical Colleges."

Recognized Medical Colleges/Seats
Once the Medical Educational Institution (Medical College) is permitted to admit 100 students to study MBBS for a total duration of 5 & half years, of which 4 & half years are classroom studies followed by 1 year of compulsory internship. And later after completion of the duration of 5 & half years, the medical authorities (MCI) of the government of India give this medical educational institution recognized status -

"The reason being that the first batch of 100 students have successfully completed the medical course with a graduate degree as per rules & regulations of the university and the norms set by Medical Council of India. Hence, after 5 & half years the permitted seats will be known as recognized seats & these type of Medical Educational Institutions are called Recognized Medical Colleges."

The conclusion is that once a new medical college is incepted. The seats beginning from the year of the first batch of admitted students and till the release of same batch of students up to the tenure of 5 & half years are known as permitted seats and later after 5 & half years the same seats are known as recognized seats.

The aspirants looking forward to pursue MBBS course are advised – try to admit in a recognized seat instead of a permitted seat. A recognized seat assures all kinds of eligibility for jobs and higher studies with a better faculty and facilities.
