Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bangalore was established in the year 1980 by the Vokkaligara Sangha and is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka.

KIMS is recognized by Medical Council of India (MCI) permanently for running MBBS Course since 1980-81 and also running Post-graduate degree/diploma courses in various disciplines since 1991-92.

Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences was established in the year 1980 by the Vokkaligara Sangha and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka.

The Vokkaligara Sangha took a formal decision on 2.9.1979 to start a medical college from the year 1980-81 and applied for permission to the Registrar, Bangalore University.
On 30.11.1980 the Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri. R Gundu Rao laid the foundation stone of the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital in the premises of the Sangha and announced the grant of vacant land in Banashankari to be used for the construction of college building and hostels. Thereafter, the Sangha appointed Dr M Basavaraju, Professor of Physiology as the principal on 1.1.1981 and other staff by March 1981 and classes were started regularly from the 16th of March 1981. Since then 16th March is observed every year as KIMS Day. The Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute was held in the year 2006.
A Magnificent college building to mark the centenary celebrations of the Vokkaligara Sangha and the Silver Jubilee of KIMS has been built at the Banashankari Campus.

The emblem of KIMS consists of a central wand with entwined snakes symbolizing the Greek and Roman Gods of Health called Hermis & Mercury, a symbol of modern medical science. The tower at the top depicts one of the four towers erected by Sri. Magadi Kempegowda, the founder of Bangalore city who had erected these towers in all four directions to mark the boundaries of the city of Bangalore which still exists as tourist spots, though the city has grown beyond these limits. The motto SATHATHA SEVA THATHPARATHE inscripted in Kannada language proclaims the goal in the life of every KIMS graduate meaning "Always devoted to the service".

The present KARNATAKA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, HUBLI,( K.I.M.S. HUBLI.) was earlier known as the KARNATAKA MEDICAL COLLEGE, HUBLI. It was established in AUGUST 1957.For initial few years, the college was functioning from a building which is now known as J.G.Commerce College. Later, it was shifted to the present beautiful campus comprising of 100 acres of land, situated on Pune – Bangalore National Highway, Vidyanagar, Hubli.
Since its inception, the Institution has carried a brilliant history of having a host of eminent teachers as its faculty, numerous alumni who have glorified the name of this Institute, not only in our country but across the globe. It has been playing, and continues to play a major role in serving the society at large, not only in terms of providing tertiary health care services to the needy, but also by developing resources in terms of health care providers and researchers.The decade between 1980 to 1990 changed its face of being a non – descript hospital in terms of treating cancer patients to a well known major and a model comprehensive regional center for cancer treatment & research. It was therefore capable of offering contemprory sophisticated diagnostic & therapeutic services to ever increasing numbers of cancer patients, not only from Karnataka state, but also from neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra.
Unfortunately, over a period of time, due to many reasons, there was a progressive decline in terms of staff strength, facilities,and subsequently the services that was provided by the Institution.For almost seventeen years there were no new recruitments. The Institute was almost on the verge of getting de – recognized by the Medical Council of India.The Government of Karnataka immediately constituted a Governing Council and in JUNE 1997, the then KARNATAKA MEDICAL COLLEGE was accorded the Autonomous status, and so was born, the present KARNATAKA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, HUBLI.This was done with an aim to achieve the objectives of providing comprehensive Under – Graduate & Post – Graduate, medical & paramedical education in various subjects & developing the facilities for research, training, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative & preventive care for the society at large.Since then the Institute has shown tremendous progress towards achieving this goal. It has now got a sufficient well trained staff strength. There has been steady progress in the facilities & the healthcare services that are now available at our Institute. Duration of Course

The duration of the course is 4 ½ years study and 1 year internship after passing final year examination.

Curriculum

The course is divided into three phases. Broad outline of each is given below and detailed syllabus can be obtained from University/ College Office

Phase I

1 year duration consisting of two terms of six months. Subjects covered are Human Anatomy, Physiology including Biophysics, Biochemistry and an introduction to Community Medicine

Examination is at the end of 1 year in three subjects (namely Human Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry)
Phase II

1 ½ years duration consisting of three terms of six months each
To get into Phase II the student should have passed all three subjects of Phase I
Subjects covered in Phase II are Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine including toxicology and Community Medicine teaching is continued. Also clinical subjects of Medicine & Surgery with allied specialities and Obstetrics & Gynaecology are taught concurrently along with hospital postings. Examination is at the end of 1 ½ years of joining second phase and is in the subjects of Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine
Phase III

Continues after the second phase and the duration is further two years consisting of four semesters of six months each
The subjects covered are Medicine and Surgery with allied sub specialities, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Community Medicine
Even those, who fail in one or all subjects of Phase II can continue in Phase III carrying over the backlog but the candidates should pass in all the Phase II subjects before appearing for the examination in final year subjects (Part II of Phase III)
Examination in Phase III is in two parts – The first part examination is 1 year after Phase II examinations and is given in three subjects namely Community Medicine, ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) and Ophthalmology. However, those who fail in any of these subject/ subjects can continue their Phase III studies and take further examination to clear the backlog. Final year examination is taken at the end of Phase III in the subjects of Medicine, Surgery and the allied specialities and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. One has to pass in all subjects before proceeding to do internship of 1 year, at the end of which one is eligible to register as graduate with M.B.B.S degree

Sri Devaraj Urs University comprising Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College under the aegis of Sri Devaraj Urs Educational Trust for Backward Classes, Kolar, is a Deemed to be University declared Under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, vide Notification No.F.9-36/2006-U.3(A) Dt. 25th May 2007, MHRD, Government of India.

The campus of Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences is situated in the former Allipur Jail Buildings which has long history. The history reveals those great freedom fighters including Sri. Chakravarthi Rajgopalachary, Sri. V.V. Giri, Sri. Bejawada Gopala Reddy, Sri. Ghantasala Venkateshwara Rao, Sri. Tekur Subramanya etc; were lodged in this jail. This jail was closed in 1958 and the old buildings and entire area of 173 acres (0.70 km2) was handed over by the Government to start the Medical College in Bellary in 1961. It has grown into prestigious institution over the last 42 years despite awful shortage of staff, lack of infrastructure and other facilities. To overcome the shortcomings the Medical College was made autonomous Institution “Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary” in 1996. This is the largest campus in Asia.

The Medical College Hospital was commissioned in 1966 and has bed strength of 680 beds. The District Hospital is situated in the heart of city and is spread over an area of 15 acres (61,000 m2) and has bed strength of 210 for the pediatrics, Gyanecology and Post Mortem Cases. Recently 20 bedded Infosys ward was added for the treatment of Japanese Encephalitis cases. To bring all departments under one roof, for the purpose of better-coordinated teaching and better treatment to the patients even these two departments of Gynaecology and Paediatrics department will be shifted to VIMS campus before the end of this year to the newly constructed wards in the VIMS campus.

Government Wellesly TB & Chest Diseases Hospital was started in 1929 over spacious area of 20 acres (81,000 m2) and has a bed strength of 280 beds. The Urban Health Center in the heart of the City was constructed in 1999 and about 120 to 140 patients are treated as outpatients daily in this center.

The Medical Council of India recognized the undergraduate MBBS course with and annual intake of 100 students in 1977. But due to the shortage of staff and other infrastructure facilities threatened to de-recognise the UG MBBS course in 1997 and immediate measures were taken to fill up the vacancies of teaching posts and to construct the buildings and purchase the equipments required by MCI. And so MCI agreed to continue the recognition of UG courses. The post graduate courses started with permission of MCI in the year 1980 in different subjects and today 32 candidates for degree courses in 15 subjects, 23 candidates for diploma courses in 9 subjects are admitted every year in this institute.

In the following 7 subjects, the appointment of staff and purchases of the equipments to fulfill the MCI norms are made and MCI has been already requested to inspect these departments and consider for PG courses recognition in these subjects. The 7 subjects are (1) Ophthalmology (2) Skin & STD (3) Anaesthesiology (4) Pharmacology (5) Pathology (6) Paediatrics (7) Orthopaedics. In the remaining subjects the efforts are being made to develop infrastructures and invite the MCI for PG course recognition.

The Super specialty subjects like Urology and Neurosurgery departments are functioning and they are well equippped with modern equipments for the treatments and operations of the patients and efforts are made to start the M.Ch. course in Urology Department.

The Institute is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore and it is to be mentioned that in all the University examinations more than 80% of the students have passed in the last 3 years. One student of this college got 15th rank in All India PG entrance examination. All the needy students both men, women are provided hostels and have the separate working women hostel. This Institute runs its own nursing school for diploma nursing studies with annual admission of 30 students and also 8 school of nursing and two college of nursing private nursing institutes are availing the clinical facilities of different hospital of this institute. Also courses of different para clinical subjects are conducted in this institution and 60 students are admitted every year.

The odds the visionary team had to contend with were many, but the co-operation and encouragement received from several quarters made the dream project a reality. The Government of Karnataka under the stewardship of Sri.R.Gundu Rao accorded sanction to the Ananda Trust to start a medical college on 6th July 1981 at Cooke Town. Subsequently, the Karnataka Government and Sri.B.Basavalingappa extended generous help with the allotment of 25 acres of land at Kadugondanahalli, at virtually no cost, to build its own campus. The Trust, which also runs a Dental College, a School of Nursing, a college of Physiotherapy as well as institutes of Medical Laboratory Technology and Radiography, has rich experience in the field of education. Its motto is to serve the weaker sections of the community, handicapped socially, educationally & economically.

Kumaraguru College of Engineering, Coimbatore is a private Engineering College started in 1984 under the auspices of Ramanandha Adigalar Foundation, a charitable educational trust of Sakthi Group. Located at 2 Kms off the Coimbatore-Mysore national highway (NH-209), the congenial and well-developed college campus spreads over a sprawling 150 acres of land.

Under the able guidance and patronage of Arutselvar Dr. N. (b) Every student shall undergo a period of certified study extending over 4 ½ academic years from the date of commencement of his/her study for the subject comprising the medical curriculum to the date of completion of the examination followed by one year compulsory rotating Internship. The 4 ½ years course has been divided into three phases.

1.Phase – I - 1 year, consisting of 2 terms of 6 months each.
2.Phase – II - 1 ½ years, consisting of 3 terms of 6 months each.
3.Phase – III - 2 years, consisting of 4 terms

1) The first year shall be occupied in the study of the Phase-I (Pre Clinical) subject of Human Anatomy(650 hrs), Physiology including Bio Physics (480 hrs), Biochemistry (240 hrs) and Introduction to Community Medicine (60 hrs).

After passing pre-clinical subjects in Phase-I, the Phase-II shall be 3 terms (1 ½ years) devoted to Para Clinical and Clinical subjects. Para Clinical subjects shall consist of Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine including Toxicology and part of Community Medicine. During this phase the clinical subjects shall be taught concurrently. The clinical subjects taught will be Medicine and its allied specialities, surgery and its allied specilities and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Phase-III Part-I ( 2 terms ) consists of Community Medicine, ENT and Ophthalmology

Phase-III Part-II ( 2 terms) consists of Medicine and its allied specialities, Surgery and its allied specialities, Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal was established on June 30, 1953. The college started with only the pre-clinical section at Manipal as the students had to go to Mangalore for their clinical training. Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, opened its doors in January 1955. During the initial years, the students pursued their pre-clinical training in Manipal followed by clinical training at Mangalore, as the state government allowed the use of its hospitals for the clinical training of its students. The Medical Council of India granted recognition to KMC Mangalore in 1958, with the first graduating class. Recognition by the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council followed soon. The College was first affiliated to Karnataka University and later in 1965 to Mysore University, followed by affiliation to Mangalore University in 1980. New courses, faculty research and student amenities have steadily developed over the years. The first College in the private self-financing sector, KMC ranks among the top 10 medical colleges in the country today. Students from 45 countries have graduated from KMC, and the degrees have been recognised worldwide. Post-graduate medical courses were started in the College in 1971. Today, the College offers P. G. Training facilities leading to 26 degrees and diplomas in medical sciences besides Ph. D. in 6 subjects, M. Sc (Medical) degrees in 5 subjects and also B.P.T., M.P.T., B.A.S.L.P., M.A.S.L.P. and M. Phil degrees. In response to the recommendations of the Medical Council of India and the local committees appointed by the Mysore University for the continuation of affiliation, facilities for teaching preclinical subjects were provided at Mangalore itself and the Mangalore section became an independent medical college in 1977. Later, in 1993 Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, of which KMC Mangalore is a unit, was conferred the Deemed University status.

KMC Mangalore campus is spread over 30.78 acres of land. The infrastructure facilities in the College are comparable with international standards. It accounts for eight, spacious air-conditioned lecture halls fitted with modern audio-visual teaching aids including multi-media projectors. KMC Central Library is a modern, fully air-conditioned library with a seating capacity of about 500, with internet facility. The library has over 36,025 books and 20,376 journals. Moreover, the library subscribes to more than 324 journals annually. In the year 2001, the Centre for Basic Sciences was started at Bejai for the first year students. Apart from the departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, there is also a big lecture hall with a capacity of 250, and a ladies hostel within the Basic Sciences Complex for first-year students. The students of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore are accommodated in 10 hostels. Of these five are for ladies. Fully air-conditioned hostels for boys and girls are also available. There is also a Medical Education Unit which ensures that the faculty are trained in teaching and student evaluation methodologies. It helps the staff in keeping themselves abreast of the advances in teaching. It also conducts orientation programmes for students, interns and postgraduates.

The campus has ample facilities for sports and games including playgrounds for cricket, hockey, football and courts for tennis, basketball, badminton, and volleyball, a gym and an athletics track. Students can join clubs for music and fine arts, literature and debating and photography. Manipal Campus of our University also has a chapter of SPIC MACAY, which stages an annual festival, Virasat, presenting luminaries of Indian dance and music. Students are also encouraged to take part in inter-college, inter-university and national level competitions. On the academic side, a unique advantage for the students in Mangalore campus is that they have exposure to clinical studies in four different hospitals, two of which are run by the State Govt. KMC Hospital, Attavar was established in 1992 and a KMC Hospital at Ambedkar Circle in 1997, which has a bed strength of 630 and 250 respectively, at present. Facilities at KMC Hospital include a Nephrology/ Dialysis unit, a Burns unit, Cardio-cath lab, C.T. and M.R.I. Centre, and Colour Doppler, besides one of the most modern Microbiology labs where we standardisation of PCR for Mycobacterium species and herpes simplex is conducted. The hospital also extends diagnostic services like Elisa and other techniques to the hospitals and various nursing homes in and around Mangalore. It has also introduced a new blood culture technique and Bact-alert.

The Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore has been utilising the Government District Hospitals at Mangalore through a Govt. order No. 3424 Health dated 20th December 1954. Wenlock District Hospital and Govt. Lady Goschen Hospital are the two government hospitals. The Super-Speciality doctors and services provided by KMC at the district hospitals include cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Nephrology, Plastic Surgery & Paediatric Surgery. The KMC Laboratories provide free lab investigations to both the inpatients and outpatients of district hospitals. 24 hours post mortem services are provided by KMC doctors including night post mortems. Poor patients referred from govt. hospitals are provided free treatment by the KMC hospitals. KMC doctors also visit the Beggars Relief Colony & give free consultation to the inmates, and any of them requiring admission are given treatment at KMC Hospital, Attavar. Therefore, these district hospitals are a Tertiary Care Hospital, made possible by KMC doctors. An ultra-modern Convention Centre has come up over 4 acres of land namely, Dr TMA Pai International Convention Centre. An indoor sports complex has also been planned. AMUPMDC Medical Entrance Exam 2010

ASSO CET is an entrance exam conducted by Association of Management of Unaided Private Medical and Dental Colleges, Maharashtra (AMUPMDC) for admission to various medical and dental courses in unaided private medical and dental colleges in Maharashtra. All the medical colleges are approved by Maharashta University of Health Sciences and Medical Council of India. Dental Colleges are also approved by Dental Council of India and other Health Science Colleges by the corresponding Central Councils.

There are eleven private medical and 21 private dental colleges in Maharasthra for which admission is conducted through ASSO CET. In addition there are are about 104 colleges for other medical bachelor courses like BAMS, BPTh, BOTh and BSc Nursing. A very large number of students from Maharastra and other partS of India appear for ASSO CET for admission in these colleges for over 7000 seats in different courses.

Availability of Application forms for ASSO CET 2010:

The forms for ASSO CET are expected to be available by March in all the colleges affiliated to AMUPMDC and also from selected branches of Punjab National Bank. The form can also be obtained by post from AMUPMDC office by sending a Demand Draft along with the request for form.

C.Abdul Hakeem College of Engineering and Technology (CAHCET) was established in the year 1998 by Melvisharam Muslim Educational Society, popularly known as MMES, committed to the service of the people, has been striving to provide literacy to the downtrodden, underprivileged people.Initially, the college was started with three disciplines viz., Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, and Computer Science & Engineering. Then, the college had to its credit three additional courses, viz., B.Tech-Informational Technology, B.E-Electronics communication engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and Civil Engineering. In 2006-07 the intake of students in E.C.E department has been increased from 60 to 90 and in 2008-09 the intake of student in C.S.E department has been incresed from 90 to 120. On our very first attempt itself Tamilnadu Sate Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), an autonomous body under Govt. of Tamilnadu has approved a student project scheme 2007-2008 in December, 2007 on “Impact of retail outlets of agricultural products on producers and consumers in Vellore district, Tamilnadu” under the guidance of Prof Richard Regis and Dr. S.Kayalvizhi. The student who is to do the project is D. Arun of II MBA. A sum of Rupees Five Thousand only has been sanctioned by TNSCST to the college towards this project.

· Ms S. Kayalvizhi, our faculty member successfully defended her doctoral thesis on A study on Job Satisfaction, Organisational Commitment and Quality of Work Life among Private Hospital Nurses in Vellore District, Tamil Nadu – South India on 12th December, 2007 for her Ph.D. awarded by Madras University.

· A project titled “A study on the impact of over the counter sale of non-prescribed medicines at medical shops among the customers at select cities TamilNadu” guided by Dr. S. Kayalvizhi, Director, School of management was approved by TamilNadu State Council For Science and Technology (Autonomous body, under Govt. of TamilNadu), Chennai on February 19,2009.
