The college was formally inaugurated on 17th October 2002 by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Honorable President of All India Congress Committee in the presence of distinguished personalities like Sri S.M.Krishna, former Chief Minister of Karnataka (presently the Governor of Maharashtra), late Dr Raja Ramanna, renowned Scientist of world repute who was the first chairman of the governing council of KNSIT till his demise, Dr Natarajan former Chairman AICTE, New Delhi, Dr K. Balaveera Reddy Vice Chancellor of Visveshewaraiah Technological University, Belgaum and other reputed personalities.

The classrooms are designed in such a way as to facilitate customized attention to each student. The laboratories are equipped with state of the art infrastructure and latest instruments pertaining to the syllabus prescribed by Visveswaraiah Technological University. Separate blocks are built for each specialized subject mainly to achieve more focus on each area of discipline.
The institute has independent blocks for Computer Science and Electronics which led to the establishment of State of the art Research Institute with emphasis on Electronics and Information Technology.
